报告摘要:

William James (1842-1910) is one of America’s most influential philosophers. His work, though, has never been used to inform writing instruction. This talk will explain why and suggest that James’s thought, which celebrates the “vague and inarticulate” aspects of human experience, is more relevant today than ever before. In particular, it will highlight his moral philosophy. James embodies, and urges us to embrace, what can be called an ethics of attunement. This is a critical, constructive habit of mind which attends closely to context in order to name, and continually rename, the world.  Grounded in the human body, an ethics of attunement uses sensation to disrupt form.  To show how such an ethics can inform writing instruction, this talk will close by presenting a writing assignment which, following James, asks students to “embrace the excess.”
